EP. 66: SLEEPERS IN THE SNOW_JOANNE HARRIS

Episode Summary

On EP 66 of The Page One Podcast, host Holly Lynn Payne interviews multi-million bestselling author, Joanne Harris, about her recent novel, Sleepers in the Snow, inspired by her father’s battle with dementia. Harris discusses living near the Yorkshire moors and how “ghost soil,” local burial history, and the Lyke Wake Dirge coffin-route ballad inform the book’s folklore and atmosphere, alongside influences from absurdist theater. She explains her synesthesia and using scent as a portable method-writing tool, and describes her read-aloud revision process, why she chose third person to preserve ambiguity and unreliability, and her understanding of ghosts as a way of processing grief, guilt, and memory. This is a special episode that reminds writers that joy, not fame or money, must sustain our work.

Episode Notes

The Page One Podcast, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.
